Chapter Seven

Alex didn’t think she would be spending Monday night at her foster parents’ dinner table being grilled about the marriage she had hidden from them. She had already given them her answer, but that didn’t seem to ease her foster dad’s annoyance or her foster mom’s sadness. It sure as hell didn’t quell Morgan’s rage, one that he let out when Robin walked through the door.

“Are you okay?” Alex asked Robin as she held an icepack to his bloody lip. “Does it hurt?”

Alex could not explain the anger that was setting her insides ablaze. She had never seen Morgan act so irrationally, and out of character. It tore her to shreds to see two of the men in her life fight each other with so much animosity and hatred. It hurt more when she saw the bruises on Robin’s face, so much so that she turned around and punched Morgan. That surprised her, and everyone else in the room. Their dad had taken Morgan to his study, and their mother helped Robin and Alex in the kitchen.

“Thank you for fighting for me,” Robin said with a cheeky grin as he kissed her bruised knuckles.

“Don’t do that,” Alex said with a pained smile. “That’s my brother.”

“He loves you.”

“He does,” Alex said with a nod.

“Not like that. Alex, Morgan is in love with you,” he said.

Alex tossed the ice pack in the sink and got up, a little frustrated. “Not everyone is in love with me, Robin.”

“I never said everyone was. Currently, the count is up to three. Me, your husband, David West, and Morgan Cooper, your foster brother.”

“He’s my brother Robin, don’t be disgusting,” she frowned.

“You don’t share a drop of blood.”

“We’ve shared more than that. Blood doesn’t make you family.”

“Alex!”

“Don’t yell at me in my mother’s kitchen!”

Robin picked up the icepack and put it on his lip. He huffed a frustrated sigh.

Alex couldn’t completely call what he was saying rubbish. She had noticed how Morgan had changed the way he treated her. He was gentler than usual that past year. He didn’t rough house with her anymore or tease her. Alex had noticed, but she wasn’t ready to admit it.

“Guys, can you come out here,” Alex heard her father say.

The doorbell then rang, and Alex was sure Jennifer had arrived. Alex wasn’t sure what Jennifer was going to do after the fact. And she was a little miffed that her campaign manager hadn’t seen that question coming.

But when they went into the living room it wasn’t just Jennifer who had visited them, but Stewart and Cindy Hill were standing in her foster parent’s living room. Her feet grew heavy and seemed to grow roots through the carpeted floor. She couldn’t move or speak. This was her safe space, and they were in it, destroying it the way they did her mother’s life.

“When were you going to tell me that your husband’s stepfather is your father?” Jennifer asked annoyed.

Alex didn’t respond, she couldn’t say a word. She continued to stare at the offending characters as if she expected them to disappear into thin air at any moment.
